Nothing below the Is300 is a good idea.

The WRX is also a bad idea as a fist car.

Get a Lexus LS. You’re about to go to college(maybe) so you need something nice over long distance that won’t brake and can hold 5 of your friends comfortably. You won’t regret it.

I’d go with the Saab. Nice while being slightly less likely to get you killed as an unexperienced driver. The WRXs and such probably aren’t the best idea.

Honestly? The NA Subarus. They will most likely be the best DD out of the bunch, tons of parts availibility, cheap to run, and haven’t been beaten to death by their previous owners.

Best choices out of the list -

Miata

S2000

All 3 Volvos

IS300

The Lexus will be the most reliable by far, and they’ll all be reasonable-ish to insure (the S2K will be the most, followed by the Miata, most likely).

The Miata is probably the best on gas. I regularly pulled >30 MPGs in daily driving.

The only problem with the Miata is that the price is slightly high, though you could get some money back from the wheels and the stupid subwoofer.

The SAAB will break(cough cough GM Turbo not cheap cough cough) and the Volvo’s are Volvo’s. They’re great but when stuff breaks it breaks bad and then you have to find a European guy wherever you are to fix it. Also nothing eats up lots of miles easier then an LS. I promise.

The ‘98 Impreza Outback gets my vote, I was going to vote for the IS300 but apparently it’s been sold.

Little Boxer-4 will get you decent gas economy, just don’t expect to win any race involving speed.

Hatchback bodystyle is semi-rare and very sensible, especially if you’re going to be moving to college in the near future. Just don’t become your friends’ taxi because that looks like a spotless interior.

Minus the headgaskets being an absolute bitch to change, this is probably the most reliable car of the bunch and thus a perfect first car.

It’s smaller than the Legacy; you don’t need that extra space and lower gas economy for your first car. Insurance is probably cheaper for the Impreza too.

I was going to nominate the S2000 and Miatas but they look like bad project cars...and you DO NOT WANT SOMEONE ELSE’S PROJECT CAR AS YOUR FIRST CAR!

JFC, the only ones here that are even REMOTLY viable are the outbacks, the lexus, the saab wagon and the miata (and thats a strech)

the turbo subarus, the evo, and the S2000 have been beaten to within an inch of their life. and parts are pricey./

the porsche: WOW. a porsche for your first car. a old porsche that was VERY well known for its reliability. wait no, the opposite of that

the 300s: nightmares to work on
the skyline: 1: its got the RB20, not even a RB25
2: its RHD. jeez.

the newer volvos are pricey to keep running. if something breaks, its repair bill is in terms of major appliances, not dollars.

the old volvo: you think your parents will let yuou drive aorund in that? and its a slow clunker...sure, its dam near impossible to kill...but slow clunker none the less.

the miata: MAYBE.

the saab wagon: i’m a saab guy, so i want to say yes. but keep in mind, its still a premium car. and turboed. needs decent oil, needs care. lots of sensors too.

the non turbo subis are the best bet here.

Judging by all the temperamental money pits on the list, I can only assume you have serious wrenching ability and limitless access to tools/parts?

Regardless, I say go with the WRX wagon. Extremely reliable. Cockroach durability. Subi rumble. Fast. World Rally Blue. And you can put shit in it.

If you want a project, I’d say go for that 928. I notice they describe it as “running,” which I translate as “barely running, needs TLC.” But if it’s a Florida car that’s been kept in storage it shouldn’t have any rust/corrosion issues.

Don’t get the Skyline. I know it’s forbidden fruit, but it isn’t as cool as you think, and the RHD will be a PITA.

Not worth it, it would ruin the ride. I’m 21 and a junior in college so I know how you feel and what you want but trust me, save the stupid cars that are fun for later in life. That second one has REAR MASSAGE SEATS. Also the cars are fast. LS are not spry in the corners but are meant for highway blasting which you will most likely be doing when you get to college.

While I don’t subscribe to the “that car is too fast for a 17 year-old!” mindset (possibly because I drove plenty of exceptionally fast cars at that age), I can’t recommend the WRX or Evo. For one, both cars are highly likely to have been horribly abused and poorly modded. ESPECIALLY one that says “No problem daily drive!” I buy things off craigslist for a living, but you don’t need any expertise to know that if an ad starts off saying “NOTHING WRONG!” then there’s something wrong.

Secondly, the WRX is... kind of an underwhelming car. The 5 speed transmission remains one of the greatest affronts to car enthusiasm.

I would avoid the Skyline. A first car shouldn’t be something where the parts need to be imported and no shop in town will touch it.

The 300ZX was a heavy, but fun and powerful sports car. I get the feeling a NA automatic example would be only one of those things.

Stay away from two-seater sports cars. It sounds like a cool idea until you have more than one other person who wants to go somewhere.

Honestly my vote would go to the Legacy Outback, or one of the Volvos. You get a decent fun factor and massive utility. If you live somewhere where it snows and you get reasonable tires, nothing will touch the Outback in the fluff.

As a general rule: When you see a high performance car selling for relatively cheap, it’s a good idea to ask yourself why a valuable car is selling for so little.

I don’t recommend going FP. It sounds like you have no solid idea of just what you want. You need to sit down and take the time to type out exactly what you want out of your first vehicle.

Do you want it to be reliable?

Do you want it to be inexpensive to repair?

How much will you be using it on a daily/weekly/monthly basis?

I think you really need to do some research on the cars you’ve chosen. The Porsche, Evo, WRXs, and Nissans are all high-maintenance cars with expensive insurance rates...especially for minors. WRXs in particular have HIGHER insurance rates than the STi because so many people have foolishly sped and crashed in them. 300ZX has infamously-tight engine bays that’re impossible to get your hands into. Porsches...you don’t want Porsche bills for your first car unless you have rich parents.

That said, if you have rich parents...well then fuck everything and go buy the EVO!

As another 21 year old college junior, I cannot agree with the “save the stupid fun cars for later in life” sentiment. Fuel economy average requirements go up every year, autonomous tech is being fast tracked everywhere, and we’re constantly bombarded with articles about millennials hating cars and not wanting to own them.

The automotive world is in flux. You want something, better buy it now and have your fun because who know what will come tomorrow. That’s why I bought a V12 Bi-turbo Mercedes with power adjustable memory massaging rear seats.

This is a better choice than anything else you’ve posted. Have it inspected by a either a Lexus dealership or trusted mechanic and do some personal research about that car. At least this dealership offers the CarFax report free so you can see it’s had 3 owners, including spending part of its life as a corporate vehicle and a lease . If you’re dead-serious about buying this car, then go join a IS300 forum, ask experienced members what trouble spots, and gather a list of things to inspect when you go to look at it.

When looking at used cars always factor in the cost of changing every fluid, spark plugs, air filter, wiper blades, and a little extra for an unforeseen problem that may creep up right after you buy said car. Anybody else’s 169k mile car isn’t “reliable.”. Even if the car has never broken down in any way. Always plan for something to break. When it does happen, you’ll be ready that way.

Side note: I’ll be trying to explain this to my daughters in about 5 years......

In our experience, the ‘01 Volvo is a good choice only if you plan on having around another $5K for repairs. We picked up a T5 for my dad to DD about three years ago with about 175K miles on it for $4.5K. Granted, by 190K most consumable bits and problem areas should be sorted out but I’d still be wary. Ours now has 207K and has had most of the front suspension replaced (but it’s still making some noise, going back to the Swedish specialist next week), a few bits in the fuel system mended, and various interior trim pieces hammered back in. It’s a fast, mostly reliable, and comfortable sports wagon though which my dad likes so we’re inclined to keep it. Also, we just picked up an ‘05 V50 2.4i for my first car with around 150K and it’s currently in the shop for an inspection after it wouldn’t start due to alarm system issues. (It’s a keeper though since my dad loves driving it.) My family overall doesn’t mind the costs of the specialist shop work because for the price you’re still getting something much nicer than say a standard Corolla so you should expect some extra fees and catches along the way. Still, if your parents don’t expect that every now and them something will go wrong with your car, then head Japanese. The Swedes are fast, reliable, and comfy but do like taking their time off every so often. The old Volvos are dead-reliable (we had two 740s that exceeded 300K) but they can have issues too, usually minor and DIY repairable (my dad used to work on them). Personally, I’d go for the R32 sedan if you are feeling crazy (because RHD import) but since it’s got 4 doors the insurance probably wouldn’t be too bad...logically speaking, the IS. Dead reliable but still fun with its RWD I6, assuming you can find one that’s not riced for your price range. The 928 would be a disaster if Top Gear is anything to go by and the 300ZX’s have the world’s worst timing belt configuration (plus it’s a ‘sports car’ so insurance might be high). Subies can have major engine issues from the head gasket on, but it seems like a very case-to-case basis. The Evo would be cool but again, it might attract unwanted attention from the Florida police department and insurance company. Same goes for the S2000. Maybe a good Infiniti G would be a possibility as well, or as others have said, go the luxobus route with an old LS or Q45. Sorry about the lengthy train of thought, but that’s just my 2 cents on the matter.

Good. The hell. Luck. Finding an affordable Mk IV Supra! They were expensive to begin with and now their prices have been through the roof ever since the first FNF back in ‘01! Hell, I got into imports as well due to that movie.

I’m going to ask you again, what do you want to do with your car? Do you have to build a show car? Do you want to autocross, drag, drift, and/or track day it? Because, right now, you don’t need anything more than a reliable car to learn how to maintain and drive as your first car. You can still get something fun but you might to do your own work to keep costs down. Modding a car takes a lot of money, I don’t know if you have a decent-paying part-time job or if your parents are rich but no matter what it’s going to take a few grand to turn a street car into something personalized and focused toward a specific automotive desire.

Lol Saab not breaking.

You've obviously never owned a Saab.

Great call. Go for either of the two Subaru Outbacks or that blue IS300.

Make it easier. Just get your mom or dad’s car and they get something new for themselves. My Ranger was my dad’s car, then my sister’s car, my dad’s for a short time again (when my sister drove our Rogue instead of the Ranger), and then it became mine when my dad got his xB.

I’m not really sure which would be a good idea for you. Subarus that old look nice but I think they often have head gasket issues. Early S2000 is a great car but prone to snap oversteer. Not a great idea for younger drivers. The 300ZX is a great car but a nightmare to work on, and at that age, it will need to be worked on. Skyline is going to be impossible to find parts for. Volvo and Porsche will break expensively. WRX will be super expensive to insure. The IS might have been fun, but it’s been taken down already. The Miata post is already taken down. Not to sound cliché, but you could afford a pretty decent NA Miata in that price range.

https://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/cto/544177… Stanced, but fixable. Chuck the style bar immediately.

https://tampa.craigslist.org/hdo/cto/542457… NB, and probably the most reliable of the three.

Good luck with whatever you pick. My first car was a $400 Chrysler and it was awful. Any of your options would likely suck less.

The Rogue is important. I don’t know how good the second gen is, but our first gen is great. If something happens to the first car you get, please purchase the Rogue once the lease is up.
